How to Make French Press Coffee

Say, "Bienvenue" to the French Press

If you are in search of rich, silky, substantial, and truly flavorful coffee then look no further than the French Press! Deceptively simple, but certainly sophisticated, the French Press can make unforgettable coffee. But before we get too ahead of ourselves in touting French Press coffee's greatness, let's learn more about the French Press.

Origins of the French Press

The beginnings of this astounding brewing method go back to France in the 1800s. The original design for the French Press way back then was a bit different and featured cheesecloth as a method to strain the coffee grounds from the coffee liquid. This overall design was mostly kept intact over the years, however. The original design of a cylindrical beaker with a piston or plunger attached to a strainer would go through various redesigns (and a few different patent wars by different inventors!).

But what exactly is French Press coffee? French Press coffee is a method of brewing that involves steeping and immersing the coffee grounds in hot water in the cylindrical vessel that is the French press. After about 4 minutes (keep this number in mind!) the top piston is pressed down. The plunger is equipped with a very fine sieve that pushes down the grounds and separates the liquid coffee from the granules of coffee beans.

The result? An incredibly rich, thick, flavorful, bold, and invigorating cup of coffee. The French Press is comparable to espresso and is a cousin in brewing principles to cold brew coffee. This method is for those who enjoy their coffee strong and substantial!

How to make French Press coffee

French Press is a relatively simple brewing process. The payoff is truly formidable coffee and the brewing time and steps are definitely worth it.

First, weigh and grind your coffee beans of choice. While the roast type can be left to a barista's discretion, the grind shouldn't be anything smaller than a coarse grind. That is because anything too small will result in silty coffee afterward.

Next, boil your filtered or purified water. Pour in just a little hot water before adding your coffee grounds; this will keep your grinds from sticking to the bottom of your brewing vessel.

Now, pour the rest of your hot water and for best results give your water and grinds a few stirs with your wooden spoon. This way you can ensure all your coffee grounds are fully immersed and none of them are dry.

Then, place the top of your French Press on but do not press the plunger down just yet! For optimal French Press, wait 4 minutes before pressing the plunger down. Our Lafeeca DJ Pour-Over Electric Kettle has a built-in brew stopwatch to help you time it!

After four minutes, press the plunger down. Once pressed, you can enjoy your fresh, silky, rich, and flavorful French Press coffee!
